The Price of Prom

There are two types of girls during prom season, the spenders, and the savers.

Boys may have it hard when coming up with the perfect promposals, but some girls claim that buying a prom dress is one of the most stressful and time-consuming things they have ever done.

When it comes to the price, many girls overlook that and just focus on trying to get a dress that will make them look their best. However every pretty dress doesn’t always come with a pretty price tag.

Spending 500 dollars on her prom dress, sophomore Erica Leland believes that it is okay to splurge a little on prom.

“Prom is a really special night,” said Leland.  “It’s a rare occasion that is worth spending money on. A perfect dress is one of the things that could help make a perfect night.”

In order to find the perfect dress you need to look near and far.  Senior Marissa Heffernan definitely looked far.

“I got a part of my dress from India,” said Heffernan.  “I have been really into the corset look, so I searched online and found something that I really liked on Etsy.”

Even though ordering online makes things easier, it really is a chance these buyers take.  You don’t know how it will fit, or what it will look like.  Luckily, the 70 dollar corset top at her doorstep is what she wanted.

“I didn’t really have any problem with the dress,” said Heffernan.  “The color was a little different than the online picture, but the site did warn me of a little color difference.”

Even though some girls go above and beyond, not everyone orders their dress from foreign countries. Girls like senior Kaitlyn Friel found it more convenient to stay local.

“My dress is from Macy’s in Portland,” said Friel. “It was just easier and cheaper honestly.”

There are many local boutiques and shops that also sell prom dresses for a small price.  Girls like senior Megan Perrault and Jillian Sheltra turned this into a friendly competition of who could get the cheaper dress.

“We both go ours [dresses] off ebay,” said Perrault.  “My dress was $29.99, and Jillian’s was $16.99 so she won.”

Even though both girls spent under 30 dollars on their prom dresses, they both got what they were looking for.

“I really like my dress,” said Sheltra. “It isn’t super elaborate, but I like the simplicity of it!”

The dress price can vary, but that’s not the only purchase girls make for their special night. Sophomore Logan Maushart knows there are more things to buy than just that.

“Well, you also have to pay for shoes, hair, makeup, and other details,” said Maushart. “There are so many things that add up, it’s crazy.”

Even though some parents pay for all the expenses, some girls like sophomore Hope Wakefield have to pay for it themselves.

“My dress was 165 dollars, so a good chunk of my paycheck from Market Basket is going towards prom,” Wakefield said.

With all these expenses, it puts a lot of stress on all these girls who are trying to get the perfect dress and accessories.  But guys like senior Casey Twomey are not really paying attention to the dress.

“The expense doesn’t matter to me,” said Twomey.  “My girlfriend will look beautiful no matter how expensive her dress is.”
