Biddeford High School students face the pressure of passing or failing their drivers test knowing their license is on the line.

A new law has surfaced and students must get 70 hours of driving before they can go for their license. Before they had to get 35 hours of driving in. It adds to the 6 months of having their permit. The student must be 16 years old to send out for their licence. Also after getting their license you must wait 9 months to drive anyone that isn’t immediate family, or aren’t 21.

According to the website “Teens Health,” students think they know all the material before the test and once they get to the test they freeze. Students who know the material then forget have test anxiety. Test anxiety is when you feel nervous before a test. Nerves are a reason why students fail because it affects their performance. Sophomore Matt Brady needs to remember a lot for the test just like every student.

“[The most stressful parts were] remembering all the minor details, and looking both ways,” said Brady.

The stress makes different students do different things. The effects of the test had junior Erin Martin stressing.

“I was very stressed, like my foot was shaking when it was on the gas, like ‘did I do this wrong?’” said Martin. “I was just quiet, praying that I’m gonna get it.”

But the test isn’t always planned 2 to 3 weeks ahead of time. Some dates could easily be 5 days from when you received that letter. The test has students driving around and practicing before. Sophomore Max Mourmouras didn’t have much time since it was planned last second.

“I only had a couple days to practice because it was kind of schedule last minute, so I just practiced around town,” said Mourmouras.

Students must keep their eyes on the road to stay focus on their driving. Any distractions, like looking at your phone or looking at the radio can cause an automatic fail.

“I just tried to focus on like I need to not be nervous because I need to pass, so deep breaths,” said Martin.

Practice makes perfect.

“I was like perfect, I really was, I did great parallel parking, great straight line backing,” said Martin. “[Now that they got their licence they struggle on] probably now would be parallel parking, I have not parallel parked since my drivers test.”

Students who have their license can get around a lot easier than before. Most students feel the same emotion after passing.

“I was very happy,” said Brady. “I felt like I had a lot more freedom to go places.”
