Finally able to vote in the presidential election, young adults find themselves picking between two controversial candidates.

In the 2016 Presidential Election, many people, especially young adults, are not happy with the candidates chosen from either the Republican or Democratic sides. Donald Trump is the candidate elected from the Republican side, Secretary Hillary Clinton from the democratic side, and from the third party Gary Johnson, Jill Stein, and Darrell Castle are all currently nominees. As the election comes closer, more people are starting to panic over who could become the next President of the United States. Senior Kaitlyn Hill explains why she thinks this election is not looking good.

“We have two candidates who are not very much liked by their own parties,” said Hill. “Plus neither one of them have the best ideas for our country. A president is supposed to be kind, intelligent, and a good role model to people all over the country. I don’t think Trump or Hillary have all of those qualities.”

Hill is not the only student here at BHS that feels this way. Senior Jacob Bilsky also believes the candidates could be better, but especially despises one candidate in particular.

“Trump is an obnoxious, racist, sexist, borderline sexual predator, and overall isn’t a very nice guy,” said Bilsky. “[He] showed racism by making a big deal out of how he opened a business which let anyone in. The fact that he believes he should be commended for such an action shows inherent prejudice, as it should be expected that you don’t discriminate in business in a modern society.”

Critical Issues teacher Brian Curit, also believes Trump is very rude.

“I have a brother that has cerebral palsy, and I am really disturbed by the fact that he makes fun of handicapped people,” said Curit. “I also have a daughter and a wife. The things he calls women and the way he disrespects women [is] totally disgusting.”

Trump is also not a born and raised politician. In fact, he has been a businessman nearly all his life. Students like Senior Tyler Pierpont believe that the country needs more than just a business leader.

“This could be a bad thing because a lot of politicians have or should have a person skill where they are able to communicate, and work well with the community,” said Pierpont. “They need to work through the community not just for himself. Trump is a businessman. Businessmen put themselves first with their money and everything, so it could be bad because he is more of a self-person.”

Curit also believes that a business mentality would not be good for the country.

“When you run a business, like Mr. Trump, you can tell people, If you don’t like it, then take the door, said Curit. “When you’re the President of the United States, it is far more complicated because you need people to work with you. Just think about how difficult that is.”

Senior Noah Morin-Roy agrees with this statement. Although he is not 100% on board, out of the two main candidates, he would choose Trump.

“Trump won’t get away with anything crazy while he is in the office with all the regulations,” said Morin-Roy.  “He’s also never been into politics before, and I hope he shakes things up in Washington a bit.  Plus he seems more focused on working to make America a better place and less focused on what other countries think of us.

Although Curit is voting for Clinton in this election, he understands that she is not the ideal candidate.

“I know a lot of people are not voting for Clinton,” said Curit. “In fact, I bet a lot of the people who are voting Mrs. Clinton are not terribly excited about doing so. If I was a Republican in this country, I would be really discouraged, because Mrs. Clinton is the most beatable and unpopular Democratic candidate I have seen in my lifetime, yet I think she will win this race.”

Senior Ben Othmer has some ideas on why people dislike Clinton.

“I feel like a big thing to think about when choosing a president is about how much you can trust them,” said Othmer. “Trump is maybe too blunt about things, but Hillary tries to avoid answering questions. However, I would rather be too informed than not informed at all.”

Othmer also pinpoints at the email scandal and how Clinton is not very honest about it.

“By hiding the emails, and thinking that it would not affect anything is extremely poor, especially when you’re a presidential candidate,” said Othmer. She is always being questioned about this important subject and avoids answering it. Well, what is going to happen when there are bigger subjects? How will we know it won’t happen again?”

Morin-Roy also questions what will happen if Clinton goes into office.

“I’m not a fan of Hillary, because in 2012 when the Benghazi incident was going on Hillary obviously choked and didn’t know what to do,” said Morin-Roy.  “Although only a small number of people were affected,  I’m still not willing to see what would happen if something on a bigger scale came up while she is in office.”

In the end, the people in America put themselves into this position said Morin-Roy.

“It seems that everyone I have talked to hates both candidates,” said Morin-Roy.  “However, I think that people are just afraid to voice their own opinions.  If nobody liked either candidate, then they wouldn’t be on the ballot.  We have put ourselves into this position and it is up for us to fix it.”
