Gabby’s go for it – January

Gabby Hamm, Staff Writer

Hi everyone! I’m Gabby and every month I do a different DIY (do it yourself) project. This month I decided to make marble mugs because I find that warm drinks help the winter go by faster. These mugs were a little more work than some of the other DIY projects I’ve done in the past, but the results were great. The only materials I used for this project were some plain white mugs,  nail polish, tooth picks, a medium size container, warm water, newspaper, and an acrylic sealant spray.

To start out, I placed the newspaper on the table and filled the containers with warm water. Next, I poured the hot pink nail polish into the water, and used a toothpick to swirl the polish around. Quickly, I took the first mug then dipped and swirled it around in the container filled with polish. After the nail polish stuck to the mug, I put the cup upside down and let it dry. I repeated this 3 more times, and in between each color I rinsed out the container before repeating. Lastly, I sprayed the mugs with acrylic sealant spray once it was dry. Make sure that you don’t touch your eyes or anything because it will burn really bad. (No, I know what you’re thinking; I didn’t get it in my eye it just said on the bottle “do not get in eye”)

Now, I gave it a few hours before bringing the mugs upstairs from the basement, so that it would have a chance to dry and get rid of the awful smell that the spray left behind. I guess a few hours wasn’t long enough because I couldn’t smell the acrylic spray any longer, but according to my mom the fumes were extremely strong.  Me, being the lazy person I am, decided to put the mugs in the garage over-night.

I went to school the next day and came home to the mugs that I thought looked great when I first made them, but were really a disaster. The mugs had a texture of dry nail polish that was just splattered on the mug. I would never drink out of any of the mugs, that’s for sure. I feel like if I were to drink out of them not only would whatever I was drinking taste like nail polish, but I could get some disease that would end up killing me. My mom also threatened to throw them away if I didn’t do something with them, so I took one for my makeup brushes, one for my pens and pencils on my desk, gave one to my sister and hid the last one in the back of the cupboard. I hope my mom doesn’t read this because she’ll throw them away.

I found this project on Buzzfeed and it was a little bit more of a challenge compared to the other DIY’s I usually stick to. I would say it took about an hour to get everything ready, do the project, and clean up. As an overall rating, I would give this a 1 out of 5 rating because I was extremely disappointed in the final product. I definitely would not recommend this project to anyone, unless you like disappointments. I’m actually really sad that it didn’t turn out the way I wanted it to because I thought I was going to customize the plain white mugs that were in my cabinets and I basically ruined them. I think there’s definitely a difference between Pinterest (where I usually find my DIY projects), and Buzzfeed (where I got this DIY). I feel like with Pinterest, I know what my end product will be, and with Buzzfeed, this is the second thing I’ve seen and I’ve either tried or someone else tried and epically failed at. I think from now on I’ll just stick to Pinterest.
